More than half of adults complain of difficulty sleeping. Of this group, half again report chronic problems with insomnia. Sleeping pills won’t cure insomnia, but cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can. CBT has been endorsed by the National Institutes of Health as an effective and preferred method for treating insomnia. Research on CBT shows the following:
* 75% of insomnia patients experience significantly improved sleep
* The majority become normal sleepers
* 85- 90% reduce or eliminate sleeping pills
* CBT is more effective than sleeping pills
CBT works because it addresses the underlying causes of insomnia—thoughts and behaviors. Because thoughts and behaviors are learned, they can be unlearned.
HOW DOES CBT TREAT INSOMNIA?
CBT teaches you to:
* Changing sleep thoughts and behaviors
* Lifestyle habits that improve sleep
* Relaxation techniques
WHO WOULD BENEFIT?
* Individuals with problems falling asleep or waking during the night
* Individuals who wish to reduce or eliminate sleep medications
* Individuals who experience daytime impairment from poor sleep
VISITS
CBT for Insomnia, a program developed and tested at Harvard Medical School, includes:
* An initial individual assessment
* Five individual treatment sessions over a six-week period
* Or five group therapy sessions over a six-week period, if available
* CBT is covered by most insurance companies

What is psychotherapy? Is it the same as counseling?
Psychotherapy is a technique designed to tackle problems of living, increase feelings of well being, alleviate mental and emotional problems, and to foster personality growth and behavior change. Psychotherapy encourages communication of conflicts and problems. There are different approaches to psychotherapy, but most types involve developing a therapeutic relationship or alliance with the therapist. The client and therapist create a dialogue to overcome problematic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Together, they may also seek practical solutions. Psychotherapy may be given to an individual, a couple, or a family. Individuals may also participate in group psychotherapy. Licensed practitioners who provide psychotherapy include psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, and social workers. State licensing boards oversee the licensing process. For example, to be licensed in the State of California, psychologists must complete 3000 hours of supervised training. They also need to pass written exams.
Counseling is a generic term referring to the exchange of opinions and ideas, advice, or guidance from a knowledgeable person. A plan of action is often sought. A psychotherapist may incorporate these aspects of counseling in their work. Of course, other professions may also provide counseling as part of their service, but this is not psychotherapy. For example, an attorney who counsels is providing legal expertise.
To aid consumers on my website, I use the term psychotherapy and counseling interchangeably. You can learn more about psychotherapy and counseling from an excellent discussion on wikipedia.
